The Writer's Book Shelf

divnvybb.gif (1520 bytes)

Whenever possible, books are in PAPERBACK.

While this is in no way intended to be an all-inclusive list of books for every writer's bookshelf, I do include those that I believe to be essential. A working writer must also be a salesperson who not only knows his or her product, but is cognizant of the market as well. The competition is fierce. But, as in all other things in life, knowledge is power. Believe in yourself and invest in your career. Whether you follow the online links and purchase the books recommended below or borrow them from your library, reading and studying them will make you a better writer. We've all heard the saying that "a goal is a journey, not a destination." Think of these books as your map. Enjoy your travels!

The marketing guides and other book links on this page will open in a new browser window. (For the complete index for THE EVERYTHING WRITING WELL Resource, click here.)

1,818 Ways to Write Better & Get Published
by Scott Edelstein
Published by Writers Digest Books
(Revised version of title previously-published as
The Writer’s Book of Checklists.)

Writing to Learn
by William K. Zinsser
A book on how to use writing as a means of learning.

On Writing Well
by William K. Zinsser
The 1998 revised, 6th edition of this writing classic.

Inventing The Truth:
The Art and Craft of Memoir

Editors: Russell Baker, William K. Zinsser
I'm including this 1998 title because it's one on my wish list. According to amazon.com, in this book "nine well-known authors describe in anecdotal detail the pleasures and problems of writing a memoir. Inventing the Truth is an indispensable book for anyone writing a memoir or anyone eager to know how authors impose an orderly structure on the disorderly experiences, memories, and emotions of the past."

Self-Editing for Fiction Writers
How To Edit Yourself Into Print

by Renni Browne, Dave King
In Writing For Profit, we mention that the hand-holding days of Maxwell Perkins-style editors is a thing of the past. Because of that, it's imperative that you teach yourself to edit your own work. This book is an excellent tutorial to help you do just that.

Bird by Bird:
Some Instructions on Writing and Life

by Anne Lamott
While I certainly don't agree with this author politically, I do find wisdom in her writing advice. Dispensed with a mixture of in-your-face humor and a self-deprecating style, Anne Lamott teaches us about one inch picture frames and other ways to get that pesky first draft down on paper. (You'll have to read the book to see what she calls those first drafts.) In my case, I've just "gotta" love an author who makes me feel less eccentric; I read Anne Lamott and I start to think of myself as downright normal.
